About Us

Who We Are

Statewide Network

Weeds do not stop at a county line. Neither do we.

The North Dakota Weed Control Association is the statewide network behind county and city weed boards, the agencies that work beside them, and the landowners who rely on both.

We share what works, speak up at the Capitol, and make sure the person holding the sprayer in Bowman County can learn from the person holding one in Pembina County.

Our Story

It started with a handful of weed officers in Stanley

In 1981 every North Dakota county was told to form a weed board and name a weed control officer. Suddenly there were dozens of people doing the same job in different places, with nobody to compare notes with.

So in the fall of 1983 a few of them got together in Stanley to talk about cost share programs, spraying and bylaws. That January, weed officers and board members met in Bismarck, elected Wayne Colberg of Cass County as their first chairman, set dues at $50 and went to work.

What We Do

Leadership, education and legislation

Weed boards, agencies and landowners across the state rely on the association for training, a voice at the Capitol and a link to the research.

  4. Assist the Department of Agriculture

Help the North Dakota Department of Agriculture build weed management programs that are effective and efficient.

  5. Shape legislation

Develop and promote sound weed management legislation.

  6. Back research

Encourage and support research on weed problems and on the solutions to them.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Help for the land you are responsible for

A noxious weed is a plant that harms the environment, animals, crops or people, and the law requires it to be controlled. Left alone, these weeds cost North Dakota millions of dollars in lost crops and forage, and public and private landowners spend millions more fighting them.

We work to help landowners put together a control plan that is effective and safe for the environment, animals and people.

Who Is at the Table

Weed boards, agencies, industry and neighbors

Since 1996 the association has been open to groups, agencies, organizations, companies and individuals, not only to county boards. Voting members elect the board and can serve on it. Associate members take part in meetings and programs without a vote.
